CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

The Department supports the various cultural activities in the Chandigarh UT. It also arranges cultural functions in association with the Education Department on Independence Day and Republic Day. The Administration also organizes Annual Chandigarh Carnival in which local institutions participate to attract Tourism in the region.

The Festival of Gardens (Rose Festival), the mega event of the U.T., having a wide attraction for various competitions which gives festive look, are covered by the Department through all aspects of media. Three days cultural Bonanza of the Rose Festival is also organized in which famous artists and singers are invited to give performance.

Though there is no separate unit for undertaking cultural programmes, the Department with small strength of staff supports cultural affairs by granting sponsorships to performances of local as well as outside cultural troupes. The Department also sends invitations to the VVIPs/Media and dignitaries for cultural and state functions.

Besides, the Department also coordinates the programmes arranged by Chandigarh Arts Council, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Lalit Kala Akademi and Sahitya Akademi. The programmes of these Akademies are widely publicised.  The Department gives financial assistance in the form of grants in aid to the three Akademies.  The Tagore Theatre Society Chandigarh is also given grant in aid by the Department to promote Art and Culture in the region.
